Woodstock Farm Sanctuary Aviary

In need of safe aviaries to guard our rescued birds against predators and avian flu threats.

About this Giving Opportunity

10% Funded

US$235.00

Donated of US$2,234.00

Almost half of the Sanctuary’s current residents are birds – we have rescued chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese and guinea fowl in our care. There are currently two major threats to our bird residents which has increased the need to build covered aviaries in almost all of our bird yards to serve as protection.

  1. Lately we are experiencing greater threats from aerial predators such as hawks and other birds of prey. By building aviary style enclosures in the bird’s yards, we will be able to safely enclose the birds while still allowing them to enjoy their yards and outdoor time. Many of our birds are disabled or special needs and unable to get away from a predator if they were to enter their yards, so we especially need protection in the coops that are home to our most compromised birds.

  2. For the past few years there has been an avian flu epidemic in the United States and around the world. This virus (HPAI) is extremely dangerous and affects both wild and domesticated (farmed) birds, however it is significantly more deadly for farmed birds and almost always fatal to chickens. We have been monitoring outbreaks of this disease for the past few years and taking various measures to keep our birds safe, but with new information about the virus, building these aviaries is the best path forward to protect our flocks.

Birds are incredibly active animals and love being outdoors in yards full of plants, bushes, and trees. And for our ducks and geese, out for a swim on their ponds. Fresh air, sunshine, the ability to dust bathe and dig for bugs to snack on, are all vital to the health and happiness of our birds. We need to balance prioritizing their safety as well as their quality of life. Building these aviaries will allow us to offer different levels of protection depending on the severity of the treats and each flock’s individual needs, while keeping the beautiful outdoor space that make Sanctuary life so special for them.

Woodstock Farm Sanctuary is entirely community funded, and we rely on individuals to rescue and provide life-long care for the animals. When external factors that threaten the safety of our rescued animals occur, we need to quickly shift priorities, which is difficult for an organization like ours with a relatively small and extremely tight budget. Caring for 300 rescued animals of all ages, in all seasons, each with their own individual needs is a ton of work and comes with a lot of expenses both expected and emergent. We are so grateful for the compassionate individuals who step up and help us give these animals the best lives we possibly can.
