Teachers training in STEAM methodology and tools e.g. Design thinking, sketch noting, story tellingAfter the first stage of the project, educators at their schools are now conducting project activities together with students.During the second stage, the young people develop a topic, and have the opportunity to meet with lecturers from the Warsaw University of Technology to learn more about the issue and dispel doubts. The project completed by the students will be presented during the Mathematics Popularization Day organized by the Warsaw University of Technology.Below is a detailed description of the activities in the second stage of the STEAMathematicsproject:
-
Teachers' own work with students: selection of the topic of project work and its implementation (the topics are related to technical and scientific fields).
-
Preparation of the outline of the work, division into roles in teams.
-
Collection of materials.
-
Visitation in schools and/or on the campus of Warsaw University of Technology - substantive support of teachers and students by academic staff of Warsaw University of Technology.
-
Consultations with lecturers of the Warsaw University of Technology.
-
Presentation of the finished project during the Day of Popularization of Mathematics held at the Technical University in September.
-
The development of a script of best practices - based on the experiences of the teachers
Interdisciplinary education, combining different disciplines, makes students see the bigger picture, moreover, students can gain competencies necessary for the professions of the future, learn about their preferences for choosing a profession and measuring their own strengths.
The STEAM Mathematics project is based on project-based education, combining different STEAM disciplines, which teach communication in a group and taking concrete actions, as well as it develops a sense of responsibility. Above all, students learn about scientific issues. In addition, the non-standard approach of the STEAMathematics project involves cooperation with a university, which means that young people not only from large metropolitan areas can aspire to study at a university of technology.FRM is a small foundation with a limited budget and can’t cover all the project’s costs. The main expenditures are related with lecturer’s remuneration and schools’ travel cost to visit the University. The financial support of the APPFIRE company would be very helpful for the students, especially from small towns, who could not afford to cover travel costs.
Travel costs: 5 schools at the cost of travel – 1500 zł = 7 500 PLNRemuneration of the lecturer for teachers – 2x – 4000 PLN = 8000 PLNRemuneration of the lecturers from the University – 10 teachers – 250 PLN = 2500 PLNTotal cost: 18 000 PLN
The first part of the project: Training of the teachers
