About This Project
CodeWomen is a non-profit tech community for women+ (we use this term inclusively, e.g. including women-identifying, trans and non-binary) in Barcelona, connecting around 600 women+ in tech (students, self-learners, juniors and experienced developers, data analysts, UX/UI designers and more). The initiative started mid 2020 within MigraCode, the free Web Dev bootcamp for migrants and refugees, with the goal of supporting women+ students in the bootcamp who clearly were in a disadvantaged position. Mid 2021 CodeWomen opened up to all women+ tech students, developers and others working in the tech sector in the Greater Barcelona area.CodeWomen aims to be an inclusive community for tech women+ : empowering and supportive, for women, by women. We provides personal tech and HR support in regular meetings. In addition, CodeWomen offers its members a safe environment to share their plans, ambitions and questions with each other. By building this community, CodeWomen stimulates both professional and personal growth. It is about learning, encouragement and support. CodeWomen is a unique place for women+ career changers to learn and get support. It provides an ideal opportunity for networking and meeting new people, and getting career advice from experienced women+ developers.CodeWomen organises three events each month:The first is a Learning & Development event with a speaker or workshop, to increase knowledge and practical skills related to tech topics and career aspects. The second monthly meeting is the hands-on Coding with Coaches session, with women+ developers who help and coach the participants (if possible, one-on-one coaching)The third session is the Open Coding Night where participants can work on their own projects or homework, get help from each other, hang out and get to know other women+ who are students/graduates/professionals in tech.Networking is a very important part of our work: connecting women, sharing useful information about jobs, reaching out to other women through our participants and volunteers, etc. All our Learning & Networking events literally start with networking as a way of introducing participants: everyone is introduced to the group by showing her/their LinkedIn page on a screen, and all participants connect with everyone right away. Many migrants suffer from loneliness. Especially for migrants and refugees without any network or friends in Barcelona, CodeWomen is a warm and welcoming community where they can quickly connect with others, find friends and get support. All CodeWomen activities are organised and executed by volunteers and one (part-time paid) Project Manager. We reach out to companies to host our coding sessions and provide some food & drinks. Since all our events and sessions are free, CodeWomen fully depends on funding partnerships and donations.
