Education for Resilience: Helping 2,000 War-Affected Ukrainian Children Catch Up and Thrive

efter CHILDREN OF HEROES OF UKRAINE FOUNDATION

Goal for 2025: $711,600 to support approximately 2,000 children
Average cost per child/month: $12–$40
Key areas: Academic tutoring, English language, IT/coding education
Format: Online, trauma-informed, individualized learning

Why This Project Matters?
Since the start of the full-scale war, Ukraine has faced one of the most severe educational crises in modern Europe. Millions of children have experienced disrupted schooling, displacement, and psychological trauma. For those who have lost one or both parents to the war, the challenges are even more profound.

These children are not only grieving; they are struggling to stay in school, keep up with learning, and imagine any stable future. Many have missed entire academic years. Without intervention, they risk falling permanently behind, dropping out, or becoming excluded from future education and employment opportunities.
Education offers more than academic knowledge. It gives structure, safety, connection, and hope. And for Ukraine’s war-affected children, it is a lifeline.

What is the Program Offers?
The Children of Heroes Foundation has developed a long-term educational support system tailored to the needs of children impacted by war. The goal is not only to help them recover lost learning but also to equip them with tools for the future.

We aim to reach 2,000 children and teens in 2025 through three educational programs:

1. Academic Tutoring and Exam Preparation
Focus: National curriculum subjects such as math and Ukrainian language
Target group: Students in grades 6–11 preparing for school exams or catching up after learning interruptions
Format: Online lessons (group or 1-on-1) with trained, trauma-informed teachers
Goal: Improve academic confidence and readiness for Ukraine’s national standardized test (NMT)
Estimated reach: 1,200 students
Duration: 9 months
Average cost: $12–15/month

2. English Language Program
Focus: 9 months curriculum plus conversation clubs with bilingual and native speakers
Target group: Children and teens aged 6–17
Format: Online, small-group sessions with placement testing and flexible progression
Goal: Close language-learning gaps, build communication confidence, support future education or work abroad
Estimated reach: 800 students
Duration: 9 months
Average cost: $20/month
Outcome: CEFR-aligned assessment, higher national test scores, improved speaking ability

3. IT and Coding Education
Focus: Digital skills, including Python, Scratch, robotics, and web development
Target group: Teenagers aged 9–17
Format: Online, project-based learning with mentorship
Goal: Provide practical, career-oriented skills for future employment in tech
Estimated reach: 250 students
Duration: 6 months
Cost per student: $390
Outcome: Digital literacy, project portfolio, pathway to IT training or work
Note: Some children may participate in more than one track, depending on their individual needs.

What Makes This Program Different?
- Fully remote and accessible from any region, including frontline and temporarily occupied areas
- Built around the psychological needs of grieving and displaced children
- Integrated with ongoing support from psychologists, caseworkers, and social workers
- Focused on long-term impact: from recovery to reintegration, from survival to empowerment.

The Broader Impact
For children who have lost a parent, education helps restore:
- Confidence and motivation
- Daily structure and sense of control
- Emotional resilience
- Access to future opportunities
- Connection with peers and mentors
Through this program, education becomes both a tool for academic recovery and a key to psychological healing.
